An Italian manufacturer of industrial waste suction equipment installed a dedusting system in a large corrugated packaging plant. The installation took place without stopping production

We had problems, they had solutions
“New Aerodinamica developed a project that solved all our problems: freed up workspace, reduced energy consumption and provided absolutely clean indoor air,” says Ghelfi Ondulati Engineer Matteo Casti.
“We trusted this company from Bergamo, because we already had a successful experience of cooperation. In addition, Paolo Radaelli (owner of New Aerodinamica) and his staff had clear ideas on how to solve our issues. As a result, we were again completely satisfied with New Aerodinamica. We did not even expect that such a complex system could be implemented in a short time and so professionally.”
The essence of the new project was the transition from a belt conveyor for transporting waste, where the trimmings fell under their own weight, to a pneumatic suction system. The advantages of this solution, in fact, were two: the freeing up space due to the system’s transfer from the floor to the top and the complete absence of dust generated during the processing of cardboard.
Ghelfi Ondulati annually produces about 100 million sqm of corrugated packaging. Considering that approximately 15% of the material goes to waste, you can imagine the volume that needs to be transported and disposed of. At the same time, with the new dust filtration system, dust not only does not rise into the air, but is also collected in granules, the trimmings are briquetted and sent for processing to paper mills, where Ghelfi buys raw materials.

Preventing problems
In March 2021, Ghelfi contacted New Aerodinamica‘s technical department to look into the situation.
“Given the customer’s needs, we found it necessary to carefully coordinate each stage of the project with the engineers of Ghelfi Ondulati,” says New Aerodinamica Project Manager Giuseppe Zinetti. “This decision helped us to avoid many problems at the stages of production and installation of the equipment.”
New Aerodinamica‘s longtime partner, an electrical manufacturer from Bergamo, helped fine-tune the dedusting system by designing a PLC allowing to permanently monitor the power consumption of fans and other elements of the system.

Without stopping production
“As we expected,” continues New Aerodinamica Owner and CEO Paolo Radaelli, “the new dedusting system could be installed without stopping production lines.
“To do this, we divided the plant into three sections, two operating lines each, and sequentially assembled and tested the system. A seemingly simple job was complicated by the fact that we had to individually select shredders that would mince any type of corrugated cardboard for suction.
“Nevertheless, we were not afraid to think out-of-the-box and, together with Ghelfi Ondulati engineers, solved this problem step by step until we brought the system to 100% performance.”
Assembly took three days…
“In addition to the advantages mentioned above, the new dedusting system has also reduced the amount of maintanace work on the lines,” adds Matteo Casti. “And that’s not to mention the better health of employees thanks to the incredible cleanliness of the air.”
For reference
Ghelfi Ondulati is a family owned packaging company founded in 1952 in Valtellina, Northern Italy. Today it is one of the leading suppliers of corrugated packaging for fruits and vegetables, no only in Italy, but in France, Spain and North Africa, sometimes thousands of miles from Valtellina.
